Aromatherapy for Circulation in Winter Season

by AdminEditor 20 Nov 2023

Winter is the season when cardiovascular diseases are prone to occur. Sometimes we even hear about young and strong individuals experiencing myocardial infarction. In fact, some herbs and aromatherapy can be incorporated into daily health routines to provide early protection against this invisible threat. The following discusses essential oils that are particularly beneficial for heart protection, lowering blood pressure, and reducing arterial embolism.

  1. Immortelle Flower (Helichrysum italicum): Immortelle is a wild flower that grows along the Mediterranean coast. Its essential oil, extracted from the flowers, is known for its ability to promote skin regeneration and reduce bruising. I personally use Immortelle oil mixed with witch hazel and yarrow hydrosols for wound disinfection. The oil's properties make it suitable for diabetes-related wounds that are challenging to heal.

Some consider Immortelle oil as the "super arnica of aromatherapy" due to its anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, making it beneficial for cardiovascular health.

Research has identified the component "Neryl acetate" in Immortelle, known for its anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. It is suitable for cardiovascular issues caused by blood clots, such as heart disease, stroke, and the use of heart stents.

  2. Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea): Note that Clary Sage essential oil differs from regular sage oil used in cooking. Clary Sage is commonly used for reducing fever and inflammation. However, caution is advised due to its content of thujone, which can affect the brain and requires careful dosage and limited use, preferably under the supervision of a qualified aromatherapist.

Clary Sage is often used for women's health during menopause, addressing issues like insomnia, hot flashes, high blood pressure, and premenstrual symptoms such as menstrual pain, palpitations, and infertility.

  3. Ylang-Ylang (Cananga odorata): Ylang-ylang, a tropical flower, is associated with enhancing mood, libido, and vitality. It can be used for conditions such as sexual frigidity, erectile dysfunction, spasms, anxiety, stress, depression, high blood pressure, and premenstrual symptoms.

The extraction of Ylang-Ylang oil is challenging, and it comes in various grades. It is important to choose a high-quality oil for optimal therapeutic benefits.

  4. Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens): Cypress, an evergreen conifer, supports respiratory and circulatory systems. It aids in relieving menstrual pain, abdominal cramps, reducing water retention, and is suitable for individuals with poor kidney metabolism. It can also assist with asthma and sore throat when used for inhalation.

  5. True Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia): Lavender is a natural antidepressant, particularly effective for insomnia. Applying a 2% lavender oil massage oil to the entire body can lead to its presence in the blood within 20 minutes, promoting relaxation and stability. It is recommended to combine lavender with other essential oils like cypress, clary sage, and bitter orange for enhanced effects.

  6. Oregano (Origanum vulgare) oil: Oregano, a common herb, possesses powerful antiviral and antibacterial properties. However, due to its strong skin irritation, it should be diluted to 0.5% before use. It can reduce blood clot formation and improve joint pain.

It's important to note that while these essential oils can improve blood pressure, they do not cause hypotension. Whether through inhalation, skin massage, or ingestion (under professional guidance), the oils undergo metabolism in the liver and kidneys. The duration of metabolism varies, with lavender taking about 2 hours and bergamot around 16 hours.

Always consult with a healthcare professional or an herbalist for personalized advice, especially if you have any underlying health conditions.
